Sus orígenes se encuentran en la fundación, en 1910, del Centro de Estudios Históricos, en el que comienza a trabajar un grupo de jóvenes que preparan sus tesis doctorales con una formación e inquietudes diversas y heterogéneas (Ramos Loscertales, Galo Sánchez, Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, Segura Soriano, Ots Capdequí o Prieto Bances) desde planteamientos renovadores y modernos. La revista Anuario de Historia del Derecho Español fue fundada por Claudio Sánchez Albornoz y otros profesores en 1924, como publicación del Centro y con un carácter anual. Su primer director fue Laureano Díez Canseco. Tras diversas vicisitudes (sobre todo, a raíz de la guerra civil), en la actualidad está cercana a cumplir el centenario. El Anuario ha sido siempre la publicación central de los historiadores del Derecho en España, y todavía constituye un punto de encuentro y referencia para los investigadores sobre nuestra materia, tanto en nuestro país como en otros muchos de Europa y América.
